Layers and how they work

Hi guys i have just started using gimp and have never chopped before and would love to get into it, but i am confused on how to use layers, can anyone please write a very basic tut on layers please?
I have done some searching and have found nothing this basic as i said ive never used it before so needs to be basic, im pritty dumb.

i'll do u a quick tutorial for u later today using paintshop pro 7 but same concept applies with gimp (if i remember correctly as its been years since i used it) you can also use it in photoshop and later paintshop pro packages as well

if you view the other tutorials and modify them to suite your software you could be the first person on here to use gimp to chop i think i'm the only one using paintshop pro on here especially as i use 7, 12 and now 13. i had the same problem as you when starting out all these tutorials and all in photoshop the only difference was i knew how paintshop pro worked already and wasn't converting then now or EVER lol

Thank you mate, I also have photoshop CS2, can I use that to chop aswell?

yeah you can and you will probably find most of the tutorials on here easier to use with photoshop as most if not all are done using photoshop

with regards to the tutorial unfortunately i have been unable to do it today due to my diabetic fiance taking ill stupid woman lol

Tutorial can now be found here hopefully it helps you it was a quick tutorial and so the quality of the design work isn't perfect but it gives you an idea how to do what you can do with layers[
